Higley Virtual Academy utilizes the web-based learning system Canvas with all grades 7-12 and will use the Florida Virtual Curriculum. Our Canvas platform will look similar for all teachers and courses. Canvas setup makes it easy to find coursework and outline assignment due dates in a calendar. In each student's Canvas classroom portal, there will be orientation videos regarding the use of Canvas and will show how to access and navigate the platform. 

Students in middle school (grades 7 & 8) can only be full-time online or full-time in person; there are no hybrid schedules available for middle school. Students in high school (grades 9-12) students can choose to be full-time online or have a hybrid schedule. See below for the breakdown for hybrid schedule options.

Reporting of attendance is mandatory to stay enrolled in the program. We believe attendance is important to the success of student learning.  Teachers and administrators will monitor when and how often students log in. This will ensure your student is on track and in compliance with state laws (we are required to withdraw any full-time student who does not log in for 10 consecutive days). Attendance must be submitted for all students and is reported weekly by parents/ students. A total of one hour per-class per-day must be logged and submitted at the end of each school week before Sunday.

Post attendance through ParentVue using the directions below (directions also available in the Homeroom Module). We suggest you wait until the end of the week to submit attendance to avoid locking your attendance. Step-by-step video: How to take attendance. or follow steps below.

• Log in to ParentVue at https://parentvue.husd.org/.
• Click on Attendance button in left-hand menu.
• Click on Time Tracker button in upper right-hand corner.
• Enter Hours and Minutes for each class--must be a minimum of 5 hours for each class each week.
• Enter Activity (optional).
• Click on Update Times button in upper right-hand corner.

Registration for start of school year enrollment will be open through the summer just as registration for in-person campuses. Earlier registration affords more opportunities if you choose a hybrid model. The cut off for registering is after the first 10 days of school.

After the first 10 days of school, enrollment for the entirety of Semester 1 (July-December) is closed and you will have to wait until S2 (January-May) enrollment opens up in November to enroll your student online. 

Modules open on Monday morning of every week. Students have the entirety of the week to finish assignments in that module with all assignments being due on Sunday night. Assignments will stay open an additional 13 days to allow students to submit late work, with accrued late penalties. They may log in anytime day or night and any day in order to review lessons and submit assignments and complete exams. Students can work ahead of schedule, if modules are opened early. 

There is no live instruction. All content is provided to students using PowerPoints, videos, and additional resources provided by each teacher. All teacher will have weekly office hours to meet with students virtually to answer and questions or concerns a student may have about their class. You can also contact your teachers through Canvas or email them in your StudentVUE/ ParentVUE.

The only required in-person instruction/assessments that are required are all state assessments and semester finals (taken in December and May). As testing approaches, Principal Byrd will be sending out information via email to all students and parents.

Honors options are available online. However, dual enrollment and AP courses are not offered through the Higley Virtual Academy.

Fees apply when a student takes more classes than six credit classes (keep in mind, EVIT accounts for two credit classes, so students taking more than four classes with EVIT on their schedule will be charged). The fee for additional coursework is $175.00 per course per semester. ($350.00 for a year-long course). There is no refund for course fees once it is paid, if a student drops the class. 

You may play sports for WFHS or HHS only if they are within boundaries to be your homeschool. If you opened enrolled out of the Higley district for HVA full-time, you cannot. You would only be eligible at the school you are in boundaries for.
